The Epiphany marks an important day in Italy where most Italians celebrate the 12th day of Christmas. Its really a beautiful celebration of faith and the birth of Jesus. The holiday is traditionally celebrated by the church and followed by a day of prayer and reflection. With the eve of the Epiphany is also the visit by the infamous witch, we call "La Befana." She is the equivalent of a Saint Nick and does leave gifts for the children. Its a traditional part of Christmas that many Italian Americans don't get to experience. Hi Margaret - I am really enjoying your blog and the informative posts on a subject near and dear to me. I dressed up as La Befana and surprised a group of my friends at my weekly Italian chit-chat group. You can read about it and see photos on my blog.
